DETAILS | The Swedish Physiotherapy Association is a professional body and a trade union and approxemately 85 % of the active physical therapists are members. The Swedish physiotherapy association has 16 staff employees and a full time employed managing director. The association holds 6 executive meetings per year and furthers liasions with other health care professions and authorities. | ||||||||||||

Physiotherapy Education |

INFORMATION AND NUMBERS | There are 8 physiotherapy schools in the country graduating about 550 students per year. The physiotherapy education is a 3 -year education which gives a Bachelor of Science Degree. There are opportunities for continuing education including Masters and Doctorate degrees. | ||||||||||||

TITLE AND REGULATIONS ON THE PROFESSION | Professional Title/ Qualification: Registrered Physical Therapist The title is protected by the state, but the professional activity is not. The rules of professional conduct are determined directly by the state through national legislation. The physical therapist must be state registrated and obtain a licence to practice. The Swedish physiotherapy association has established a code of ethics for physical therapists. The national authority responsible for the physiotherapy profession in Sweden is "The National Board of Health and Welfare". There are sufficient employment opportunities for physical therapists in Sweden at the moment. | ||||||||||||

INSURANCE AND PRACTICE REGULATIONS | The physiotherapy services in Sweden are not determined by the profession. The physical therapist determines the clinical intervention of physiotherapy him/herself. Sweden offers both public and private physiotherapy services. The insurance cover for physiotherapy is paid through the national health care system. | ||||||||||||
