DETAILS | The Dutch headquarter has about 100 staff employees and a full time employed managing director. There are sections within the Dutch physiotherapy association which maintain the interests of independent practitioners and employed physiotherapists. The association is concerned with all professional matters on behalf of physiotherapists, including continuing professional development programmes. The Dutch association is member of a trade union. | ||||||||||||

Physiotherapy Education |

INFORMATION AND NUMBERS | Higher education in the Netherlands includes both university education and higher professional education. There are 11 physiotherapy schools in the country graduating 1.200 students per year. Physiotherapy education is a 4-year bachelor diploma course (6.720 hrs) which takes place in schools based in higher education. Continuing education is well established although there are no specific master programmes for physiotherapists. Physiotherapists are involved in both teaching and research. TITLE AND REGULATIONS ON THE PROFESSION | Professional Title/ Qualification: Physical therapist, Bachelor The title is protected through state legislation, but not the professional activity. The rules of professional conduct are determined by the association. The physiotherapist must be state registered and obtain a license to practice. The association has established a code of ethics for physiotherapists. The national authority responsible for the physiotherapy profession in The Netherlands is the "Department of Health Care". At the moment (January 2012) there are sufficient employment opportunities for physiotherapists. |

INSURANCE AND PRACTICE REGULATIONS | The physiotherapy services are regulated by law and determined by the profession. The physiotherapist determines the clinical intervention of physiotherapy him/herself.. The insurance cover for physiotherapy is paid both through the national health care system and privately by the patient. Since 01-01-2006 patients have direct access to physical therapy. | ||||||||||||
