DETAILS | The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists is a professional body for physiotherapists in the Republic of Ireland. The Irish headquarter has a CEO , four full time staff and three part time staff employees. The association holds bi monthly Board meetings and furthers liasions with other health and Social care professions and authorities. The Society is not a member of a trade union. | ||||||||||||

INFORMATION AND NUMBERS | Education matters are the responsibility of the Irish Society's Standing committee of Education Committee and specialist working parties all of whom report to the Board of the Irish Society which is the decision making body. Additionally it has an Accreditation Working Group which evaluates the educational programmes and ensures that they meet the standards set by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. Physiotherapy education in Ireland is a four-year honours degree course based in 4 Universities All graduates have access to Masters Degrees and Doctorates. There are 4 physiotherapy schools in the country with 40 (approx.) students per school, the number increasing every year. | ||||||||||||

TITLE AND REGULATIONS ON THE PROFESSION | Professional Title/ Qualification: Bsc. (Honours) Physiotherapy B. Physiotherapy Rules of professional conduct have been established, and professional liability insurance is available through membership. There is no legal protection of the title of physiotherapist or Physical Therapist, membership of the Irish Society confers the right to use the term Chartered Physiotherapist There is no legal protection of activity of physiotherapists but nor is there any legal limitation of activity. Eligibility for membership of the Irish Society is required to practice physiotherapy in the public sector. Ireland has a code of ethics for physiotherapists and The Irish Society have adopted the European Core Standards of Physiotherapy Practice. The "Department of Health" is responsible for the physiotherapy profession in Ireland. The lack of employment opportunities of graduate Physiotherapists is a matter of current serious concern for the Profession. | ||||||||||||

INSURANCE AND PRACTICE REGULATIONS | There is direct access to physiotherapy in Ireland. The physiotherapy services are determined by the profession and the physiotherapist determines the clinical intervention of physiotherapy him/herself. Physiotherapy is available in both public and private physiotherapy centres. The insurance cover for physiotherapy is paid both through the national health care system and privately by the patient. | ||||||||||||
