  DETAILS   The Austrian Physiotherapy Association has nine staff employees including one full time managing director at the headquaters in Vienna. The organisation holds regular Executive Committeee meetings (one per month) and furthers liasions with other health care professions and authorities.

Physiotherapy Education
  INFORMATION AND NUMBERS  
The education takes place at Universities for Applied Sciences. Entry level is the general qualification for university entrance. The duration of physiotherapy study/education is 3 years. Physiotherapy Study at University finishes with the academic title BSc.

Physiotherapists are involved in both teaching and research but there is no formal recognition of physiotherapy specialists.

The Austrian Physiotherapy Association is both a professional body and educational body. The association has their own education department for continuing studies. Continuing education is obligatory for all physiotherapists.

The title and the professional activity is protected by the state. The rules of professional conduct are determined directly by the state through national legislation. The physiotherapist must obtain a licence to practice. Austria has a code of ethics for physiotherapists.

The national authority responsible for legislation concerning the physiotherapy profession in Austria is the "Bundesministerium für Gesundheit".

There is currently few risk of unemployment of physiotherapists.


Practice of physiotherapy
  INSURANCE AND PRACTICE REGULATIONS   The physiotherapy treatment /intervention for patients is planned, executed and evaluated by the physiotherapist professionals folowing a referral by a medical doctor. In prevention and advisory fields physiotherapists work without such a referall.

The costs for physiotherapy are shared between the compulsory health insurance and the patients themselves.
